US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions for a proposed 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, urging Hamas to accept the deal while warning that rejecting it would only worsen the situation.
Trump said the ceasefire plan, brokered with the help of Qatar and Egypt, aims to create a window for continued negotiations to end the ongoing war. “My representatives had a long and productive meeting with the Israelis today on Gaza. Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalize the 60-day ceasefire, during which time we will work with all parties to end the war,” Trump posted on his platform, Truth Social.
He acknowledged the mediation efforts by Qatar and Egypt, stating, “The Qataris and Egyptians, who have worked very hard to help bring peace, will deliver this final proposal.” Trump added, “I hope, for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas takes this deal, because it will not get better — it will only get worse.”
The announcement comes just days ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s scheduled visit to the United States on July 7.
Despite the ceasefire talks, Israeli military operations have continued. According to Al Jazeera, at least 50 Israeli airstrikes targeted areas in eastern Gaza City on Monday following mass evacuation warnings. Medical sources reported that at least 68 Palestinians were killed on Sunday alone, including 47 in Gaza City and northern Gaza.
Gaza’s Health Ministry has stated that the war has killed over 56,500 people and injured more than 133,000 since it began. On the Israeli side, 1,139 people were killed during the October 7 attacks, which also saw over 200 people taken hostage.
The proposed ceasefire could mark a turning point in the conflict, though the path forward remains uncertain as regional and international actors continue to push for a broader peace agreement.
